Regulatory news and changes

6. Which heat-pump policy and certification changes should update the sales workflow?

What grant amounts can an AI assistant mention?

Grant amounts must be conditional, location-specific and dated. The approved England-and-Wales notice, updated on 20 October 2026, specifies £7,500 for relevant air-to-water and ground-source categories, £2,500 for air-to-air heat pumps, and £9,000 for qualifying off-gas-grid oil or LPG replacements using air-to-water or ground-source systems. Ofgem identifies the higher grant’s availability as 21 July 2026 to 31 March 2027. Approved grant notice · Ofgem property-owner guidance. (gov.uk)

Recommended enquiry fields are property location, existing heating fuel, proposed technology, off-gas-grid status and relevant installation/application dates. Keep the outcome as potential eligibility pending installer verification, not an AI-issued entitlement.

For air-to-air work, verify the installer’s certification scope and practical application route before advertising that a particular installation can receive funding. The grant category alone is not evidence that every proposed system or installer qualifies.

What does the redeveloped MCS scheme change?

MCS describes a rollout throughout 2026 and into 2027. Its scheme materials identify roles including Main Contact, Licensee and Technical Supervisor. NICEIC’s transition guidance distinguishes installers already on the redeveloped scheme from those still on the previous scheme, including differences in consumer-code requirements. Do not let an automation supplier replace every document merely because a newer template exists. Record the installer’s scheme status, applicable document version and certification-body instructions. MCS’s complaints policy says some obligations depend on which requirements applied when the customer contract was entered into. MCS complaints policy.

Recommended automation boundaries: prepare documentation, chase missing evidence and route approval; do not manufacture measurements, engineer sign-offs or certification evidence.

What changes for new-build quotations in England?

The Future Homes and Buildings Standards regulations generally commence on 24 March 2027, with specified higher-risk-building provisions commencing on 24 September 2027 and transitional arrangements. Updated guidance addresses energy performance, ventilation, heat-pump controls, installation, commissioning and operational information. MHCLG circular.

Recommended action: make project jurisdiction, building type and applicable regulatory version compulsory before generating technical specifications. Do not market this new-build change as a requirement for every existing homeowner to replace a boiler.

A separate earlier change relaxed England’s air-source heat-pump permitted-development rules from 29 May 2025, including removal of the one-metre boundary rule. Use this to update obsolete screening questions—not to automate a blanket planning approval. Government explanation of the changes.
