What has changed that matters to a DIY buyer?

Three current developments change the build-or-buy decision.

  1. Native call handling deserves a fresh inspection. ServiceM8’s current Phone Agent documentation describes message capture, transfers, booking-form links and submission of an online booking on a caller’s behalf. It distinguishes business-hours, after-hours and voicemail modes. Do not assume that an agency-built receptionist is the only route—or that submitting a booking form necessarily means an engineer appointment has been confirmed. (support.servicem8.com)
  2. API access is a contractual question as well as a technical one. Joblogic’s API terms, updated on 22 September 2026, distinguish development and production keys, require approval for production integrations, require disclosure of AI integrations and restrict autonomous actions outside approved operations. Obtain written confirmation of your permitted workflow before building it. (joblogic.com)
  3. Agentic-AI guidance is still developing. The ICO opened a call for evidence on 8 October 2026, closing 20 November 2026. As of this guide’s research date, that exercise is ongoing; it is not a completed compliance standard or a supplier certification. (citizen-space.ico.org.uk)

Trade discussion is useful for discovering questions, not establishing returns. An August 2026 BetaTalk episode includes heating contractors discussing AI receptionists, while an October 2026 HP&R article discusses installer call capture. Neither establishes a representative UK HVAC payback benchmark. (buzzsprout.com)
